Wanaka has seen significant growth with the permanent population
nearly doubling in the last ten years to just over 7,000, this includes
1900 in Hawea. Still perceived as clean, green and safe, it has
become a mecca for New Zealand and overseas purchasers alike. Popular
for Southland people buying holiday homes and permanently people
moving here away from the city life. An excess of demand over supply
for residential property dominated the market during 2001 - 2004
and drove prices upwards. At present the market is in a more balanced
state with the number of properties available having increased.
